Get Off the Grid Fest welcomes Energy Savers Network (ESN) is a nonprofit volunteer organization which provides basic energy efficiency upgrades for low-income households in Buncombe County. ESN is based in Asheville, North Carolina and is part of the Blue Horizons Project, a broader effort to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy across our region. Low-income communities often pay disproportionately high energy costs ($300-400/mo.) as a result of living in poorly insulated homes and not fully realizing where energy losses can be prevented. Every week ESN volunteer teams join with low-income homeowners and renters to install energy efficiency upgrades and perform basic repairs designed to reduce energy losses.
Dr. Rodger Helm, ESN Board Member, and Yulia Schaffer, ESN Operations Coordinator will explain what and how Energy Savers Network helps our low income neighbors and our volunteers reduce their energy-related bills and keep warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The presentation will discuss the role of volunteers, recruiting households, tools that we use in homes, and it will provide examples of the repairs we complete. This presentation will help people to link climate change with social justice and understand that working with a group like Energy Savers Network is a great opportunity to help those households and communities that are, and will continue to be, most impacted by climate change, while being the least able to adjust to the effects. Energy Savers Network will speak on Saturday afternoon in the Presentation Tent, right before the Climate Change and Justice in NC panel. https://www.energysaversnetwork.com/
